aren’t you tired?

aren’t you tired
of recoiling with disgust every time you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror?
aren’t you tired
of holding it in every time you stand up or walk around or pose for a picture?
aren’t you tired
of punishing yourself at Pilates and willing your waist to shrink?
aren’t you tired
of starving your body, skipping meals only to eat a pint of ice cream for dinner at midnight?
aren’t you tired
of scrolling to infinity in search of the next body to fill your mind with everlasting envy?
aren’t you tired
of daydreaming about the life that is just on the other side of the one surgical procedure you swear will make you finally become the woman you always knew you could be (and that you know will only make you want more)?
aren’t you tired?
of blaming your mother for handing down a legacy of self-consciousness in the shape of your first bra?
of hating the world for selling you a dream of the perfect body that will forever be an ad and a PayPal click away yet just out of reach?
of tormenting yourself for buying into the barren dream of perfection?
aren’t you tired
of hating your body knowing it’s the only one you have to carry you in this lifetime?
rest, beloved, rest.
